Which sport or type of cross training should I pick pertaining to my "main" sport?

Soccer

Typically requiring endurance and lower extremity strength, here is what I recommend for cross training.

*Basketball: An explosive sport, basketball will counter the muscles utilized for distance running and incorporates fast-twitch muscles. A sport requiring hand skills and hand-eye coordination, basketball allows a soccer player who traditionally lacks in hand skills to work on those specific traits.

*Weight Training/CrossFit: Weight training and building muscle can appear unattractive to a soccer player that runs for 90 straight minutes. However, building muscles during the offseason give muscles stressed during the season a break from strenuous work.

Basketball

Built through explosive athleticism and agility, here is what I recommend for cross training.

*Swimming: Basketball requires explosion, which creates immense pressure on lower extremities. Swimming removes the pressure caused by pushing and exploding off the ground, thus giving those muscle groups and body parts a chance to recover.

*Yoga: Following the same reasons why swimming is beneficial, yoga not only provides the body with a break, yoga can loosen up knee/hip/ankle joints that receive a pounding during basketball activities.

Football

Considered the most physically demanding sport for some people, football is built through weights, agility, and explosion.

*Swimming: The main fitness focus for a majority of football programs is weight lifting and developing physicality. Constant weight lifting can place strenuous pressure on joints and muscles, and swimming offers opposite results. No pressure is placed on the body and range of motions can be increased through the various types of swimming.

*Soccer: Football stresses athleticism and hand skills. Soccer is a sport that requires stamina and the use of one's feet. Coaches and scouts talk about how important foot skills are for running routes, pass/run blocking, and dropping back into coverage. Soccer not only requires foot skills, but can push an athlete who is not comfortable with soccer, to focus immensly when moving with the ball. This will help coordination and basic foot skills.

Baseball

Focusing on arm strength and very specific skill sets, cross training is crucial for baseball players that wish to increase the duration of their careers. Here is what I recommend for cross training.

*Soccer: Requiring opposite skill sets in comparison to baseball, soccer offers a form of fitness that cannot be accessed through baseball. Constant fitness for lower extremities and developing foot skills provides a chance for shoulders and elbows to recover for baseball players.

*Yoga: Overuse injuries are so prevalent in baseball in regards to elbow and shoulder injuries, yoga can help with lower the risk of these types of injuries from occuring. Increasing flexability and ligement/tendon strength within shoulders and elbows may lower the amoutnm of young pitchers that experience Tommy John surgery.
